The
foundation's current athletics project is the renovation of Art
Crate Field located between Bethel Junior High and Bethel High School.
In November 2002, the Pierce County Council allocated $500,000
to upgrade Art Crate Field with artificial turf. The state also
allocated $500,000 in its capital construction budget. The funds,
along with $40,000 in individual contributions, have made it possible
to begin work on the project. The new field is set for completion
by September 2004.
The artificial turf will make Art Crate Field a year-round facility
that the entire community can enjoy. A joint-use agreement between
the county and the district will open the field to soccer and flag
football leagues. It will also make Art Crate Field a contender
to host playoff-level high school football games in the future.
The field will be home to all three high schools (when the new high
school opens in 2005).
